workshop announcement

As an artist I am drawn to the beautiful and peaceful.  I love painting flowers, mountain paths, big skys over the plains and people.  I am currently working on a series of large flowers. The series has been particularly fun for me as I seem to learn and progress with each painting.  I will be sharing my process with workshop participants.

On the first day we will spend an hour or so discussing and taking some reference photo’s early in the day then when we meet with our paint and supplies at 2 that afternoon we will get into the design of the page,  color schemes, techniques.  Our first day we will work directly from living flowers in the studio.  The second day we will work from the reference photo’s we took the day before.   I will help students work out a design for the page and convert them to a large painting.  The last day we will work on white flowers and how to approach greys in watercolor.

Irving Arts Center
http://www.irvingartscenter.com

Featuring oil paintings by Jaime Arredondo, an Irving native now residing in New York. Arredondo’s series of lush, large-scale paintings of flowers explore color, light and beauty as well as the sensual and spiritual symbolism of the flower in both Western and non-Western cultures. The exhibit which is timed to coincide with national Hispanic Heritage Month, showcases the work of an artist who strongly identifies with both the Mexican and Tejano cultures of Texas. The son of a Native American father of Mexican heritage and a Tejana mother, Arredondo’s paintings explore Mesoamerican culture where the flower operates not as a decorative device (as in the Western world), but as a dichotomous symbol, recollecting moments of the living and of the after-life.

Abstraction could no longer give me all the things that were necessary to continue painting. I needed a larger audience, a larger vision, and a greater sense of light and color. I wanted to speak directly and unequivocally about Beauty in a way that was romantic and poetic but not cynical. Each of my paintings had to be unique, singular and visionary. I turned to Nature, and nature led me to the flower.

Artist Statement:

My series “Flowers” is a study in shape, color, light and shadow. I create these paintings to give the flowers a much longer life, in hopes that more people will get to see the one that captivated me. The purpose of the bigger scale is to create an impact that will force as many viewers as possible, to see the beauty that would otherwise go unnoticed.

I create art to share with the viewer a slice of what and how, I perceive my surroundings.

The Black Box Theatre Exhibition is co-sponsored by Denton Community Theatre. Black Box hours are Monday and Wednesday, 1:00 – 4:00 pm and Friday, 10:30 am – 1:30 pm. The art may also be viewed during any of the performances at the Black Box.
